Salem Police said they got a call about a pedestrian hit by a Commuter Rail train just beyond the Salem Station around 10:14 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
The woman was said to have walked onto the tracks as the train was passing through the Beverly/Salem line, MBTA Police Spokesperson Richard Sullivan told Daily Voice. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her identity was not released.
The incident caused significant delays on the Newburyport line, with one train eventually being taken out of service, according to the MBTA Commuter Rail on Twitter.
Passengers onboard the train were being accommodated by shuttle buses and passengers waiting for the train were being advised to seek alliterative travel options.
Salem Police said the incident does not appear criminal in nature and that they are investigating along with the Office of the District Attorney and Transit Police.
